Pressing & Restoration Desk

What pressing fixes: non-color-breaking structural defects — bends, dents, spine roll, soft creases, and wrinkles. A professional press on a clean book can move a grade by half a point to a full point, which on a key issue can mean thousands of dollars.

What pressing can't fix: color-breaking creases, tears, missing pieces, tape, stains, and restoration of any kind. If a defect breaks color, pressing is cosmetic at best — and dishonest at worst.

Disclose. Always. Undisclosed restoration is the fastest way to torch your reputation and get banned from every marketplace. CGC and CBCS both screen for restoration — a properly pressed book grades as unrestored; a trimmed or color-touched book gets the dreaded restored label and loses most of its value.

The submission checklist: 1) Get a pre-grade read on the book first — ComicVision tells you if it's even a grading candidate. 2) Press only if the defect is pressable and the math works (pressing cost + grading fee vs. the value gain). 3) Use a reputable presser who documents before/after. 4) Submit and let the slab do the talking.

Climate rule of thumb: the same temperature you're comfortable in, steady humidity, and zero direct sunlight on the boxes.
