Pokémon Card Grading — Should You Grade Your Pokémon Cards?

Pokémon grading has its own logic. The cards are younger than sports cards, the market rewards gem-mint condition more than almost anything else, and the fees are the same — which means most modern Pokémon cards shouldn't be graded, and a small handful absolutely should. Here's how to tell which pile yours is in.

The Pokémon cards worth grading

Early-era cards (Base Set through e-Card era), iconic characters in strong condition, and low-population modern gems. If a card sells for strong money raw and would grade a 9 or 10, grading multiplies it.

The ones that aren't — be honest here

Most modern commons and bulk hollos never earn their fees back: a $3 card can't recover $25–$35 in all-in grading costs. Pre-grade and check comps before submitting anything from a modern binder.

Which grader for Pokémon cards?

PSA slabs carry the strongest resale premium on high-end Pokémon; CGC and BGS are respected and often cheaper. For a card you'll resell, the premium usually pays; for a personal-collection card, value tiers make sense.

Condition decides everything — check it free

Pokémon buyers pay the biggest premiums for gem-mint copies, so the pre-grade matters more here than anywhere: score centering, corners, edges, and surface free before paying anyone.

Pokémon Grading FAQ

Is it worth grading Pokémon cards?

Only the ones that pass the math: high pre-grade, valuable card, and a real price gap between grade levels — typically early-era icons and low-population modern gems. Most bulk Pokémon cards aren't worth the fees; the comps and pre-grade tell you which yours are.

How much does it cost to grade a Pokémon card?

The same as any card: roughly $10–$100+ depending on the company and turnaround, plus shipping both ways — typically $25–$35 all-in per card at economy tiers.

Should I grade my Charizard?

If it's an early-era Charizard in strong condition — absolutely check: pre-grade it free, then compare raw versus graded sold prices. If the graded premium clears the fees by a wide margin, grade it. A damaged modern reprint usually should stay raw.

Which grading company is best for Pokémon?

PSA carries the strongest resale premium on high-end Pokémon; CGC and BGS are trusted alternatives that often cost less. For resale, lean PSA; for keeps, the value tiers work.
